Caption: Mary Strong Clemens (1873-1968), American botanist and plant collector and her husband Joseph Clemens. Born in New York as Mary Knapp Strong, she married Joseph Clemens, a minister, who joined the United States Army in 1902 as a chaplain. He served in the Philippines in 1905-1907, where Mary made extensive plant-collecting trips. After her husband's retirement, he became her assistant in full-time botanical collecting, mainly in Asia, New Guinea and Australia.
