Caption: Treatment of neck arthritis. Frontal X-ray of the neck of a 56-year-old man with osteoarthritis of the neck, whose cervical spine has been stabilised with a metal plate (upper centre). The plate (rectangular) is holding two adjacent vertebrae together in the correct alignment. This procedure is known as arthrodesis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disorder usually caused by mechanical wear and tear of the affected joint. The joint loses its smooth cartilage lining causing the bones to rub against each other, and leading to pain, swelling, stiffness and deformity.
