Cocaine was once used in surgery, but was withdrawn once its toxic and stimulant effects became known. Procaine is a less potent anaesthetic, and has a shorter duration of action, but is non-toxic. It has been largely replaced in surgery by drugs such as lidocaine, which is more potent and longer lasting Local anaesthetics are used in minor operations, or in preparations for use in the home.
