Caption: George Saward (1822-1873). 19th Century illustration of the British engineer George Saward. Saward was the manager of the British Electric Telegraph Company, which laid an underwater telegraph cable from Britain to Ireland in 1854. He became director of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, which constructed a single underwater telegraph circuit between the west of Ireland and Newfoundland in America.
