Caption: Eugene Godard (1827-1890). 1867 illustration of the French aeronaut Eugene Godard Aine. By the end of 1846 Godard had designed built and successfully launched several unmanned hydrogen balloons. He went on to manufacture aerostats and perform numerous first in balloon aviation, including the first Canadian passenger flight, from Montreal to Pointe-Olivier, Quebec. He was twice made 'Aeronaut of the Emperor'.
