Caption: Joseph-Francois Malgaigne (1806-1865). 1867 illustration of the French surgeon Joseph-Francois Malgaigne. Malgaigne was the first surgeon in France to practice general anaesthesia using ether. He specialised in orthopaedic surgery of the knee hip and shoulder. In 1834 he published the influential work on surgical techniques 'Manuel de medecine operatoire'.
