Caption: March of Dimes' for the Infantile Paralysis Foundation flow into White House, USA, 1938. Thousands of letters containing ten-cent contributions to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (polio) were sent to the foundation, set up by President Roosevelt, who was himself paralysed by polio. The money went towards supporting victims, education and research. Polio epidemics in the early 20th century left thousands paralysed. Vaccines were developed in the 1950s and 1960s.
