Caption: Differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph of a Lepocinclis spirogyroides (formerly Euglena spirogyra) protozoan showing the stiff but flexible pellicle (bands) outside the cell membrane that helps it keep its shape. In this species the pellicle is covered with helical rows of small knobs. Magnification: x400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
