Caption: Cardiac insufficiency. Combined computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scan of the heart activity (coloured area) of a patient with cardiac insufficiency (heart failure). The heart failure is due to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM, weakened and enlarged heart). This is an axial scan, passing horizontally through the body at the level of the chest. The scan shows that the patient's heart function is reduced. This is 2-18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography. FDG is a radioactive tracer that can be used to identify active sites in the body.
