Caption: Secondary cancer. Combined computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scan of cancerous sites (coloured areas) in a patient with secondary cancers. This is a coronal scan, passing vertically through the body seen from the front. The primary cancer was a Hurthle cell cancer of the thyroid gland, which has been surgically removed. However, the cancer has spread (metastasised) to the upper mediastinum (near the heart), the liver (centre left) and the pancreas (lower right). This is a 2-18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) PET scan. FDG is a radioactive tracer that can be used to identify cancer sites.
