Caption: Human brain, combined computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans. These are axial scans passing horizontally through a normal human head. The front of the head is at top in each scan. The scan sequence moves from the top of the head to the level of the nose, and the order is across the screen from top left to lower right. This is 2-18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography. FDG is a radioactive tracer that can be used to identify active sites in the body that take up the tracer, in this case the brain.
