Caption: Hydronephrosis of the kidney, posterior view. Image 2 of 2. Scintigram showing the kidneys (coloured areas) of a patient with hydronephrosis of the right kidney (centre right). The bladder is at bottom centre. Hydronephrosis is a condition where a kidney swells due to obstruction of the flow of urine from the kidney. The kidneys have been imaged using a radioactive tracer (technetium-99m, Tc-99m) and the MAG3 technique. In this image, drainage of the tracer in the urine from the abnormal kidney has been impeded, leading to the strong signal seen here from the urine-laden kidney. For poor uptake by this kidney, see image C001/7566.
