Caption: Cochlea, light micrograph. The cochlea is a hollow spiral that is part of the inner ear. It contains microscopic hairs (not seen) that respond to sound vibrations from the middle ear. This section has cut through the spirals (white spaces). Nerves connected to the cochlea carry the sound information as electric impulses to the brain. Magnification: x5.7 when printed 10 centimetres high.
