Caption: Slice of orange in a Kirlian imaging system. Kirlian imaging is a technique that records the coronal discharge (purple) from an object placed in a strong electric field. The phenomenon occurs when an electrically grounded object generates an electrical field, ionising the air around the object and causing it to emit light when the atoms recombine. The corona discharge is first shown with the lights on and then with the lights off.
