Caption: Pulmonary oedema. Frontal chest X-ray of a 66-year-old woman with acute pulmonary oedema (opaque area at bottom) of her right lung (left). Pulmonary oedema is the accumulation of fluid in the lung. The fluid blocks the passage of the X-rays and therefore shows up as a white area in the image. The left lung (dark patch, right) is unaffected and shows the normal appearance of a lung in an X-ray. Pulmonary oedema may be caused through failure of the heart to remove fluid from the lung circulation (cardiogenic pulmonary oedema), or through a direct injury to the lung itself (noncardiogenic pulmonary oedema). Treatment focuses on increasing lung function and removing the cause of the problem.
