Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Gall bladder cancer surgery. Image 1 of 12. Trocar being inserted into an abdominal incision at the start of surgery to remove a cancerous gall bladder. This is a laparoscopic tool being used before the main operation, to assess how far the cancer has spread. The gall bladder is a small organ that stores bile from the liver, and releases it into the digestive tract. Cancer of the gall bladder is relatively rare, and is usually treated by surgical removal. Prognosis is poor, because the cancer has usually spread, requiring removal of parts of the liver and other surrounding organs.
