Caption: Normal small intestine. Coloured frontal X-ray of the abdomen of an adult showing a healthy small intestine. The ileum can be seen (left and lower left) along with the duodenum (upper right). They are seen in high contrast because a drink containing radio-opaque barium was given prior to the X-ray, in order to highlight it. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine and is primarily responsible for the breakdown of food using enzymes. The rest of the small intestine consists of the jejunum and ileum, which are mainly involved in the absorption of nutrients, vitamin B12 and bile salts.
