Caption: Brain blood vessel malformation. Coloured frontal angiogram (X-ray) of the blood vessels (red and black) in the left hemisphere of a patient's brain, showing cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The left internal carotid artery can be seen at lower right (red). AVM is characterised by a tangle of veins and arteries. Symptoms range from mild headaches to uncontrollable Grand mal seizures. Treatment is usually to prevent or limit the damage caused by haemorrhages (bleeding), although surgery may be necessary. The blood vessels have been highlighted through selective catheterisation using the Seldinger technique.
