Caption: Algodystrophy of the hands, scintigram. Algodystrophy (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) is a condition causing pain, swelling and tremor in affected areas (white). In its later stages, it can lead to muscle wasting and demineralisation of bone. The cause is thought to be nerve damage after a trauma, such as an injury or surgery. The radioactive tracer used here was technetium-99m (Tc-99m), using the MDP (methylene diphosphonate) technique to detect abnormal bone activity.
