Caption: Colon cysts. Endoscopic view of cystic pneumatosis, the presence of benign (non-cancerous) gas-filled cysts in the colon (large intestine). The cysts form either in the submucosa or in the subserosa layers of the bowel wall and can grow up to 3 centimetres. The cause is not known, but it has been suggested that they are linked to necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), in which some of the bowel undergoes necrosis (tissue death).
