Caption: Colon cysts. Endoscopic view of cystic pneumatosis, the presence of benign (non-cancerous) gas-filled cysts in the colon (large intestine). One has burst (lower centre), allowing the gas to be expelled from the cyst. The cysts form either in the submucosa or in the subserosa layers of the bowel wall and can grow up to 3 centimetres. The cause is not known, but it has been suggested that they are linked to necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), in which some of the bowel undergoes necrosis (tissue death).
