Caption: Flower head of the Small Scabious (Scabiosa columbaria) immediately after the colourful florets (corolla) have fallen away. This reveals the pale green involucels which subtends the flower - an epicalyx of fused segments. Within these is a calyx (calyces) each with 5 long, blackish, bristle-like calyx-teeth. This species is typical of chalk downland in the south of England.
