Caption: Subclavian artery and vein, post-mortem. These blood vessels run below the clavicles (collar bones), and take blood to and from the upper body (arms, shoulders, neck and head). The dissection of this tissue has produced a cross-section across the artery (left) and vein (right). The artery has a smaller lumen (central space) and a thicker, muscular wall, while the vein has a much thinner wall. Arteries carry blood away from the heart to the body, and veins carry the blood back to the heart.
