Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Stent in ampulla of Vater. Surgeon's hands exposing a stent (blue) in the ampulla of Vater. This stent, exposed during an operation, had been implanted during earlier surgery to treat and prevent a reoccurence of biliary obstruction (obstruction of the bile ducts). The ampulla of Vater is where the common bile duct and pancreatic duct join, releasing their contents into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The tissue surrounding the stent is the wall of the duodenum, and bile is released into the duodenum through the stent.
