Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Spleen removal surgery. Image 2 of 9. Keyhole surgery tools being used during removal of a patient's enlarged spleen. Keyhole surgery (also called minimally invasive surgery) involves the use of endoscopic tools inserted through holes in the patient's skin, muscle and fat layers to reach the internal organs (seen on screen). This is less traumatic than opening the body up. The spleen acts as a filter for the blood. An enlarged spleen, which can be caused by infection or other disorders, is usually surgically removed.
