Caption: Spleen removal surgery. Image 6 of 9. Surgeon inserting his hand through a plastic portal during keyhole surgery to remove a patient's enlarged spleen. The portal protects the abdominal incision, while allowing the surgeon to remove the spleen, which has been surgically detached using other tools. The keyhole surgery (also called minimally invasive surgery) allows the spleen to be removed through a relatively small hole in the abdomen. This is less traumatic than opening the body up. The spleen acts as a filter for the blood. An enlarged spleen, which can be caused by infection or other disorders, is usually surgically removed.
