This image is part of the sequence Pancreatic cancer, Whipple's procedure

Caption: Pancreatic cancer, Whipple surgery. Image 13 of 13. Tissue excised after Whipple surgery on a patient with pancreatic cancer. This operation involves the removal of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), part of the stomach, and the head of the pancreas. The duodenum is the tube section, while the irregular mass of tissue at top is the pancreatic cancer. The duodenum, although often healthy, is removed because it shares a blood supply with the head of the pancreas. The jejunum (the next part of the small intestine) is attached to the remains of the pancreas and stomach to bypass the removed tissue and organs.
