Caption: Mammalian tongue papillae. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two overlapping filiform papillae from a mammalian tongue. These are backward facing projections that sense pressure. The papillae have a scaly appearance because they are constantly shedding their top layer of skin. Bacteria (pink) can be seen on the papillae.
