Caption: Language area brain activation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Brain of a 36-year-old man with blood vessel (arteriovenous) malformation (large dark patch) in the supramarginal gyrus of the left parietal lobe, and epilepsy. A number of views are seen showing transverse sections through different levels of the brain. Front of the brain is at top. Language areas within the brain are seen to be active (coloured areas) during sentence generation. The man was given a task to create words from a letter he had been given. The parietal lobe is important for the integration of sensory information and the manipulation of objects.
