Caption: Oesophageal cancer surgery. Image 13 of 28. Surgeons operating in the chest cavity of a patient with cancer of the oesophagus (gullet). This is known as open-chest surgery, or a thoracotomy. The chest wall and lungs are being held back by retractors. Special electrical scissors are being used to avoid damage to the trachea and bronchi as the overlying tissue is moved to access the oesophagus. The cancerous oesophageal tissue will be removed, and the remaining healthy part connected back to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis).
