Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Oesophageal cancer surgery. Image 15 of 28. Surgeons removing the cancerous part of the oesophagus (gullet) from the chest cavity of a patient with cancer of the oesophagus. Also seen here are the mediastinal nodes, lymph nodes from the mediastinal area inside the chest. Various specialised retractors are being used in this open-chest surgery (thoracotomy). Once the cancerous tissue has been removed, the remaining healthy part of the oesophagus will be connected back to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis).
