Surgeon using a cutting tool to remove the cancerous part of the oesophagus (gullet) from the chest cavity of a patient with cancer of the oesophagus. Also seen here are the mediastinal nodes (lymph nodes from the mediastinal area inside the chest) and part of the stomach. Once the cancerous tissue has been removed, the remaining healthy part of the oesophagus will be connected back to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis).
