Caption: Oesophageal cancer surgery. Image 21 of 28. Surgeons inserting drains during the closing stages of an operation on a patient with cancer of the oesophagus (gullet). The lower oesophagus had turned cancerous and has been removed using open-chest surgery (thoracotomy). The upper oesophagus was then stapled to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis). Here, drains are being inserted to drain any fluid that accumulates inside the body after the operation.
