Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Oesophageal cancer surgery. Image 23 of 28. Surgeons closing up a patient's chest during the closing stages of an operation to treat cancer of the oesophagus (gullet). The lower oesophagus had turned cancerous and was removed using open-chest surgery (thoracotomy). The upper oesophagus was then stapled to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis). Here, sutures are being used to join the muscles and other tissues either side of the sternum (breast bone).
