Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Oesophageal cancer surgery. Image 24 of 28. Surgeon cleaning up the chest wound of a patient who has been operated on to treat cancer of the oesophagus (gullet). The lower oesophagus had turned cancerous and was removed using open-chest surgery (thoracotomy). The upper oesophagus was then stapled to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis). The line of staples mark where the sternum (breast bone) was cracked open to access the organs inside the chest cavity.
