Caption: Plant embryo, confocal light micrograph. Median (central) longitudinal section through the apical meristem of a dormant vegetative shoot. The apical meristem regions are where new growth takes place in flowering plants. The mature embryo (centre) is the structure that will grow and develop into a new plant. Here, the tissue has been stained with propidium iodide. This technique is useful for studying cell division patterns during embryo development. This embryo is from an Arabidopsis thaliana plant.
