Caption: Mouse karyotype. A karyotype is the complete set of chromosomes of an organism. Mice have 40 chromosomes in total: 20 inherited from the mother and 20 from the father. The sex chromosomes, which determine the individual's gender, are at bottom right. Males have an X sex chromosome and a Y sex chromosome, females have two X sex chromosomes.
