Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Historical hydraulic boat lifts. Repairs being carried out on one of the four historical boat lifts on the Canal du Centre. Built between 1888 and 1917, they were designed to overcome the fact that the water level across one 7 kilometre section of the canal rises by 66.2 metres. They are the last set of hydraulic lift locks left in the world and were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. They are still in operation today, but only for recreational use. Commercial traffic now passes through a modern lift on a different section of the canal. Photographed between La Louviere and Thieu, Wallonia, Belgium.
