Caption: Light micrograph of the cyrtophorid ciliate Trithigmostoma cucullus. Trithigmostoma feeds on Diatoms and other small algae, ingested via an oral basket. Several green food vacuoles are visible inside. On the lower side of the animal the big macronuleus is visible, performing binary fission. Several parasitic bacteria can be seen inside the macronucleus. The image is focused to the dorsal side of the animal lacking any cilia except a short row of cilia visible on the left side of the animal. Microscopic contrast technique : Differential interference contrast. Magnification 650x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
