Caption: Cervix epithelium. Light micrograph of epithelial tissue from the cervix, the neck of the uterus. Across top are the normal layers of stratified squamous epithelium. Across lower centre is the basal layer where epithelial cells form and move upwards. As they move upwards, they become progressively larger in volume (cytoplasm expansion, causing the stain to turn from purple to pink) and flatter. It is this sequence that is disrupted in conditions such as dysplasia.
