Caption: Human skin. Light micrograph of epithelial tissue from the skin. Across top are the normal layers of stratified squamous epithelium. Across lower centre is the basal layer where epithelial cells form and move upwards. As they move upwards, they become progressively larger and flatter. It is this sequence that is disrupted in conditions such as dysplasia (see C001/8838).
