Caption: Human respiratory syncytial virus, illustration. Human respiratory syncytial virus causes respiratory infections. It is the main cause of the lower tract respiratory infections among children. No antiviral therapy is available against this virus. The viral genome consists of single stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid, yellow curve). At either end of the RNA are large polymerase (L) proteins. Nucleoproteins (small blue beads) bind the genomic RNA. The projections on the viral surface contain fusion and attachment proteins.
