Caption: US Naval Observatory refractor telescope, 19th century. This 9.62-inch refractor was constructed by Merz and Mahler of Munich, Germany, at a cost of USD 6000. It was mounted at the US Naval Observatory, Washington DC, USA, in August 1844. Its protecting dome was six metres in diameter. Observations made here included double stars, asteroids, comets, occultations, planets, satellites, eclipses, and transits. When the US Naval Observatory moved to a new site in 1892, this telescope was dismounted but not remounted at the new site. This telescope's lens is now in the Smithsonian Museum of Science and Technology.
