Caption: Great Dam of Marib. Artwork of an aerial view of the Great Dam of Marib, which dates from the 7th century BC in what is now modern-day Yemen. Marib was the capital of the Kingdom of Sheba, mentioned in biblical texts. The dam was made of packed earth and used to capture the monsoon rains to irrigate the land around the city. The dam was 580 metres in length and 4 to 7 metres high. Successive civilisations maintained the dam until a final failure and abandonment in the 6th century AD.
