Caption: Viking longship. Artwork showing how the Vikings built a longship. The Viking longships were long, narrow and light wooden boats. They had a shallow hull that increased their speed and allowed the Vikings to navigate shallow coastal waters and carry out beach landings. The longships were powered by sail and oars, and carried crews of 40-50. They were used for long distance trade and commerce, as well as raids. This is a type of longship known as a drekkar ('dragon ship'), dating from the 11th century.
