Caption: Bacterial lobular pneumonia. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan showing a section through the lungs of a 58-year-old man with pneumonia. Blue regions of inflammation are visible in both lungs (orange), caused by the pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia, which results in inflammation of the lung, is most commonly caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. The pathogen is inhaled into the lung segments, or lobes, where it causes the alveoli (air sacs) to become blocked with pus. Treatment is with antibiotics.
