Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an Archaea extremophile from an extreme acidic environment (acidophile). Organisms that inhabit extreme environments are known as extremophiles and thrive in habitats which for other terrestrial life-forms are intolerably hostile or even lethal. This Archaea sample is an extremophile involved in acid mineral bioleaching from a Finnish mine. Bioleaching is the extraction of metals from their ores through the use of living organisms. Magnification: x3000 at 10cm wide.
