Caption: Volcanic research. Volcanologist in a protective suit obtaining a sample of lava from a lava flow. The temperature of the molten rock can reach 1100 degrees Celsius. The sample is cooled in water and then analysed. The composition of the sample can help scientists understand the type of eruption and what caused it. This is part of an eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise (Peak of the Furnace) volcano, on Reunion, an island in the Indian Ocean. This is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. This eruption was the largest at this volcano in the past 100 years. Photographed in April 2007.
