Caption: Robotics research. Researcher holding a Swarm-Bot. Based on the biological principles of self-organisation, this robot is made up of small simple robots (s-bots), which can self-assemble and self-organize to perform tasks collectively. Similar to the behaviour of ants, a collective swarm-bot is capable of carrying a heavy object that a single s-bot would be unable to move. The assembled Swarm-Bot can also cross rough terrain and obstacles. Photographed at the Intelligent Systems Laboratory (LIS), at the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne), Lausanne, Switzerland.
