Caption: Southern smooth snake (Coronella girondica). The southern smooth snake is harmless to humans. They reach around 60 centimetres in length and are found throughout southern Europe and Northern Africa. They generally eat small lizards, with skinks, geckos, smaller snakes and occasionally mammals also taken. Young ones eat insects. Most of their prey is crushed by constriction and is swallowed head first.
